Velveted Coues Deer
Arizona
Coues deer (pronounced cows) is a subspecies of Whitetail deer whose range is South Eastern Arizona. This capture of a young Coues with velvet on his antlers was made near Tucson. I like it because of the completely out of focus boulder at the bottom of the frame, a seemingly surreal delineation point between the animal kingdom and the screwed up world of humans. The vibe of the deer is calm. He’s perfectly content…as long as I stay on my side…and don’t screw up his world.

Thanks Jackie! Captured in 1995, the film (Kodachrome 64 Professional) sat in a box all this time.

It took awhile! I’m so glad I hung onto all my negatives and transparencies. It wasn’t easy with all the moving around that I have done over the years. Who knew there would be blogs and other social media that would make it so easy to share it all?
