One Man Band
I can no longer remember the name of the One Man Band. In the early 90s, he was a fixture on the boardwalk at Venice Beach and that’s where I first talked to him. He played bass and bass drum with his feet, His right hand was his mike stand, his right arm performed lightning fast cymbal crashes, left hand played sax and left elbow triggered the snare drum (visible behind his right shoulder)…and he had da funk!
He disappeared for a while, then showed up at Bally’s gym in North Hollywood, a LA musician’s hang/workout place. When I asked him about his absence, he told me someone who caught his act on the boardwalk, booked him on the Tonight Show, then gave him a one year nightclub booking in Japan. When he returned, he bought a van and that was where he was living.
My next encounter with the One Man Band was when we we both wound up in the same piano class at LA Valley College. The photo above was in 1994. That was the last time I saw him.
