Picacho Wilderness Sunset – California

During my recent trip to Picacho Wilderness, I was treated to several days of incessant, gale winds. Photography was out of the question except for sunrises and sunsets against a distant foreground because the scene is far enough away and dark enough where you can’t see the trees and shrubs blowing in the wind. This image is one of those sunsets.

  1. If I didn’t know this was a photograph I would have seriously felt like I was looking at an oil painting.
You do paint magically with your camera, lens and eye.
I am drawn to the bright yellowy gold of the reflection of the setting sun. As my eye is drawn upward the yellowy gold is magically changing colour into the soft purple and pink fingers stretching out to fill the sky with its gentle glow against the still blue of the sky. On the right some clouds have gone from bright yellowy gold to the rich white glow of colour.

The contrast of the brightness of the sky with the mountains and trees barely visible in the darkness. The outline of the mountains gives the feeling of the descending cloak of darkness that will soon smother all the bright richness of the waning sunset!.
