Korean Woman Shellfishing on Udo 우도

The crimson in this photograph is not crimson tide, a mutant form of algae that occur when weather and temperature conditions are just right and can kill fish and even sicken humans who eat contaminated filter-feeder species such as, clams, mussels and oysters. Rather, it is bright crimson colored seaweed washed up on the rocks which I have never seen anywhere else other than the island of Udo, South Korea (click on view larger to to see this).

After scanning the Ektachrome 100 reversal film, the color of the crimson seaweed was so intense, I had to give that specific area of the image minus 30% hue/saturation in Photoshop. If not, the crimson would have been out of bounds for the sRGB colorspace used on the web. But there’s an even better reason for toning it down; my eyes were going directly to the seaweed instead of the lovely, mid-seveties, shellfisherwoman, and she’s supposed to be the star of the show.
