Nam-San Park – Seoul, South Korea
Driving to Nam-San Park I spotted the Grand Hyatt hotel and Nam-San Tower at the top of a wooded hill and pulled over to the side of the freeway to make this capture. My thinking was there were probably millions photos taken of the tower from within the park, and next to none taken from the side of the busy freeway. The cops came, but I already had what I wanted…so with a smile and a 고맙습니다, gomabseubnida (thank you), I packed up my camera and tripod and went on my way.

How could I not love this image? Clouds! The clouds are dreamy. Your passion shows in all of you images, but there is something special about clouds. They evoke feelings like nothing else.

Clouds make the photographers heart beat faster. They roam the sky constantly changing shape and position, and could disappear in an instant…so the moment of capture must be decisive.
“Needle – Seoul, South Korea” was captured on Kodachrome 64, a transparency film known for its tight grain structure but once digitized showed apparent color noise (grain) in the sky. In Photoshop, I selected the entire sky and applied a smoothing effect. This eliminated the noise, but presented another problem. Although noiseless, the edges of the clouds were now too soft and undefined. They looked unreal. So the next step was to add a small amount of sharpening with a mask so it affected only the edges of the clouds. I know I’ve said countless times on Blog-Bisogno.com that I never sharpen the sky…but never say never!
