Barn and Yellow Tree – North Carolina, USA

This scene was found walking along a dirt road in western North Carolina, an old barn flanked on the left by a golden-yellow tree and on the right by a red-orange sugar maple. It is the peak of autumn, the hills a climax of color.

There are many rotting tobacco barns in the Carolinas. They lie in testament to better days for the tobacco industry. Once a year they are adorned with autumn leaves and come alive again.

The color of the rusted metal on the front of this old barn is analogous to the autumn leaves. Analogous color is a common color scheme found in nature, but in this scene the hand of man has joined nature harmoniously.

  I find that the shades of yellow surrounding the barn is the perfect backdrop to enhance the weather beaten wood of the barn. Then to see the brightness of the colours of the equipment inside is startling when it appears that the barn is abandoned!

    Some of these old barns still serve a purpose as storage. A lot of them were made from felled trees when the land was cleared. I’m always dying to go inside and see what’s there, but don’t want to trespass.

I attribute the beauty of this image to fall color analogously aligned with the old barn. All I did was click the shutter.

I stayed true to Kodak color film when everyone else switched to Japanese film. I liked the Kodak color palette better, but It’s a moot point now that I have gone 100% digital.
