Beach Flora as Art Installation
Beach Flora as Art Installation – Point Sal, California, USA
I spent a good five-minute on Google trying to find out the name of this plant, and that is the extent of my attention span so I will never know. The reasons for my intrigue are many; I’ve only seen this plant at Point Sal State Beach, it appears to be a succulent, but it also looks like seaweed, it has roots and flowers, it grows in the sand at the high water mark, it obviously thrives on salt and sand neither of which packs much nutritional punch, and cannot be found on Google in five minutes or less.
All that doesn’t really matter though. To me, each plant looked like a separate art installation if framed in a certain way with a sand and clay design behind, and I wound up with three captures that I treasure. I treasure them because it is either a nine mile hike (the hard way), or a 12 mile hike (the easy way) to get to Point Sal. Off road vehicles and mountain bikes are not allowed so you have to hoof it. When I went, you were allowed to camp on the beach so I spent three days there. Now, you can no longer camp so that makes it an 18-24 mile day hike. Doesn’t leave much time for the beach, does it?
