Los Angeles’ favorite cat seems to have nine lives. The three-sided “Felix” automobile dealership sign near downtown that has survived earthquakes, fires, riots and recession escaped another close call Thursday as the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission voted to declare it a historic-cultural monument. 1. Nature’s Child. I have been fighting for the restoration of this sign for as long as I’ve lived downtown (ten years). About six months ago I did a Google search on the Felix Chevrolet sign and all the photos that came up were horrid. I decided a good image would help the cause. Even though the sign was semi-restored, the job was botched by switching out the neon lights for LED. Brilliant!!! The fight goes on…

  2. Hi Shannon. I don’t know how I get off on these tangents such as saving kitschy old signs. I guess it is a quirky part of my personality. The good part is it led me to create this photograph. It was definitely not off the cuff. I spent a good part of 2014 thinking about how this capture would be executed. I’m so glad you liked it.
