Famous Photographer Quote #0181
“In any art, you don’t know in advance what you want to say – it’s revealed to you as you say it. That’s the difference between art and illustration.”

Years ago when I first read this Siskind quote, it seemed very painterly in concept to me. My shortsightedness was soon devastated once I saw his photographic images. And then I realized that whenever I picked up my camera “knowing” what I was going after, all I got for my efforts was a voiceless photograph of a thing without heart or soul. Once I abandoned that “knowing” mindset, all of that changed. That’s when the images I came back with began
to sing.
