Hello. I’m a prairie dog.

Hello, I’m a prairie dog. I’m classified as a varmint so hunters don’t have to wait for hunting season or anything like that. They can shoot me anytime they feel like it. In fact, the bag limit is sixty of us per day so don’t come to close, or I’ll run and hide down that hole directly behind me before you can even get me in your crosshairs. And if you’re one of those government fellers and want to put fumigants down the hole, or leave toxic bait around, we’re hardy varmints and we’ll survive…I hope.
Nikon N90S SLR, Nikkor AF Zoom-NIKKOR 80-200mm f-2.8D ED, Kodak Kodachrome 25 35mm color transparency film, exposure not recorded, handheld, Plustek OpticFilm 7600i Ai film scanner, LaserSoft Imaging SilverFast 8 scanner software.
Awesome capture! Love the expression on his/her face and your caption. 😀

Due to their predicament, prairie dogs must keep their distance from humans (this was shot with a focal length of 200mm), but they still manage to hang on to their inherent inquisitiveness.
Most people are unaware of the role that prairie dogs play in keeping the Great Plains healthy. Their aeration of the soil is essential to the native grasses that grow there…and they’re so darn cute!

It’s been my experience that most people are not very aware in general so what you’re saying doesn’t surprise me. If we left everything alone to function as it was meant to be things would be much better.

Every creature is on this planet for a reason. It is nature’s plan. Education is the key. It is now up to the next generation. They are our hope.

hi little prairie dog…
I believe you survived and didn’t become one of the sixty in the bag 🙂
because everybody knows how clever and sophisticated you are.

Thank you Naughtyscarlett for commenting on these highly intelligent, clever and sophisticated animals. I would love to be that clever and sophisticated myself!
When I was a toddler, I wandered off into the forest, and as a consequence ended up being raised by wolves. Throughout the years, I have maintained my wolf-like characteristics and managed to achieved alpha-male status, but in my next life I would really like to come back as a prairie dog. 🙂

I’ve never seen this character…he’s got a strong eye and his funny face is killing me (made me smile)

I’m glad I was able to introduce you. As cute as the prairie dog is, they are threatened and need help.
