“Cactus, Sun, Cloud” was taken in 1976 while on the road with a band out of Brooklyn, NY. We were doing a 50 week road tour around the country playing six nights a week. A tough gig, especially when you are playing drums and fighting pleurisy at the same time! About 3/4 of the way into the tour, a one week engagement was canceled leaving us stranded somewhere in Wisconsin with a week off. I jumped on a plane headed for AZ for some R&R with family. I had one week to shake my pleurisy and with the Arizona sun, hanging with family, and some good Italian home cooking, I did it. This image was captured while there and it still puts me in a calm, meditative state every time I look at it. I hope it does the same for you.

Minolta SR-T 101 SLR, 50mm Minolta lens, Kodak Kodachrome 25 35mm transparency film scanned on Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 35 mm film scanner. Exposure not recorded. Shot in the afternoon, I grossly underexposed to make the promontory in the foreground a silhouette and give the sky a surreal effect.

    • When you are using a telephoto lens, you really have to be careful. I take a piece of exposed 35mm transparency film and tape it over the viewfinder. This knocks down the amount of light dramatically.
