Bon Odori is a Japanese folk dance to welcome the spirits of the dead, one of many attractions at this years Nisei Festival. Nisei is the embodiment of everything that is good about  Downtown Los Angeles, a coming together of all ethnic groups to celebrate Japanese culture, explore Little Tokyo and party together.

Photographer Richard Avedon once commented that he much preferred taking portraits of older subjects and I agree. I suppose the beauty of youth should be celebrated, but it is like shooting a clean slate, a life yet to be lived. In the face of an older subject it’s all there, a whole life right there for you to read. That is why the Odori dancer above commanded my attention and I thank her for giving me exactly what I wanted.

Nikon D3 DSLR, AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200 mm f/2.8D ED, exposure: f/3.5 @ 1/2000 sec., ISO 1600, exposure mode: Aperture Priority, Exposure index: 0, focal length: 170 mm, white balance: Auto, handheld.
