Bench – Descanso Garden

The occasion was National Public Gardens Day, May 11, 2012 sponsored by Better Homes and Gardens and the American Public Garden Association. I arrived early at Descanso Garden nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles, California. The morning was overcast with a forecast for sunny skies in the afternoon.

Looking for a unique image that would represent Descanso Garden, I set out on the misty trails. They had given me a trail map, but that was already buried deeply in one of the pockets of my cargo pants. I prefer to wander aimlessly anyway (always good luck for me). Before long, I was standing in front of a park bench in deep shade. There was a camellia growing next to it which had littered the bench with its pink blossoms. Descanso Garden is all about camellias and the people who love them. This scene was perfect. I set up my camera and tripod and waited. Five or six visitors with point and shoots stopped to take a picture and exchange good mornings. As they moved on, I knew they were wondering if I was ever going to take a shot. I did…as soon as a ray of sunlight came through the canopy shining like a spotlight on the bench and the ground beneath it.

Approaching the trail head of Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space, one is confronted by a nondescript chain link fence and a large orange sign. Walk through the gate at sunrise in spring, and you will be treated to the panorama above. Continue along the winding path, and it just keeps getting better and better.

Warning Sign

Warning SignWarning Sign – Las Virgenes Open Space, Calabasas, California, USA

This warning sign seemed ominous to me.  Pile driven into a hillside awash with yellow spring wildflowers and surrounded by thorny scrub, I read more into it. It was a grim reminder that when parkland is purchased by the government, they are buying the land rights (surface rights), not the mineral rights (subsurface rights). Petroleum, in this case natural gas, falls under those mineral rights. Upper Las Virgenes Open Space is a mere preserve, but the same holds true for local, state, and national parks. Led by Halliburton, the push is on for more natural gas exploration. Proponents claim it to be cleaner than oil, but that may not be the case due to the extraction method of hydraulic fracturing sometimes called fracking. Have a happy Earth Day!  :-)

Crucifix Cactus

Crucifix CactusCrucifix Cactus – Catalina Mountains foothills, Tucson, Arizona, USA

While hiking in the Catalina foothills, this saguaro cactus skeleton stopped me dead in my tracks. Now I’m not a guy who’s prone to seeing Virgin Mary’s weeping tears of blood or anything like that, but in the late afternoon light I could distinctly make out a crucifix. Any Christian man would have dropped to his knees and prayed, however I opted to capture the scene on Kodak Ektachrome 100 transparency film. Was I thinking of creating fine art photography at the time? No, not really. It was more like; Geez, if  I don’t get a picture of this, no one will ever believe me.

Before leaving, I did take a moment to raise my head to the sky and reverently say, “Thank you for putting me here during the golden hour.”

Old Water Tank 2 – Upper Las Virgines Open Space Preserve

Old Water Tank 2Old Water Tank 2 – Upper Las Virgines Open Space Preserve, Calabasas, California, USA

I was up by 5:00 am and at the trail head at 6:30, still dark and just before sunrise. I ambled up the trail trying not to step on any newborn cottontail bunnies. They were all over hustling for food before the coyotes woke up. I thought to myself that one tenth of them will make it, and the rest will become coyote breakfast. Isn’t nature wonderful? Well, not for cottontail  bunnies I guess!

The last time I hiked at Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, I made a capture I named  “Corner Post on Hill”  and also lined up some possible shots nearby for next time. All I had to do was find the first fork in the trail and go right. For some unknown reason, I decided to go left instead. I suppose the idea of seeing something new was too strong to ignore. After a while I came upon this old rusty water tank left over from the days when cattle grazed on these hills. When I noticed the nicely shaped live oak tree behind, I knew I had to have it.

Captured on a cold rainy day in May,
The park was mine lest a few hardy souls,
Within hours I had their trust,

sign - Las Virgenes Canyon 11/13/2011One of my pet projects over the years has been saving the Ahmanson Ranch from the hands of developers. Washington Mutual Bank CEO Kerry Killinger was bent on turning this vast, unspoiled wilderness just outside of Los Angeles into a development of large upscale homes. Fortunately, Washington Mutual gave in after years of overwhelming opposition and sold the land to the State of California. It is now one of my favorite places for hiking and mountain biking.
