Word Up – Bristol Hotel, 423 W. 8th St., Downtown Los Angeles, CA, USA, 5/01/2011

Word Up – Bristol Hotel was taken at 5:43 am, Sunday, 5/01/2011. I scouted this shot last week trying to determine the right time of day to make the capture on my day off. 5:30 am looked perfect so I set my alarm for 5 am, but shut it off in my sleep. Luckily the Bristol is only a block from my loft. Jumping out of bed, I threw on my clothes, grabbed my gear and was set up to get the shot at 5:43. To view 32 bit HDR image larger, click here.
Built in 1906 and vacant since 2003, the Hotel in now finally open. Below is Luigi Barducci Contessi’s Colori Kitchen, the neighborhood Italian Restaurant where you can BYOB with no corking fee, the new D-Town Burger, and the Golden Gopher bar.

View From My Window – Los Angeles Athletic Club, 431 W. 7th St., Los Angeles, CA

It was Monday morning, January 3, 2011, back to work day. Saturday and Sunday I was busy taking family pictures and by Monday, I was yet to get my first copyrighted image in 2011. Too busy to go out, I finally threw open one of the windows in my studio facing 7th Street, stuck my camera out the window and took a handheld shot of The Los Angeles Athletic Club diagonally across the street. I have been thinking of doing this for quite some time now, but my fear of heights gave me a near panic attack every time I got near the 5th floor window. I’m cool when the window is closed, but not when it’s open. On this day, the rain had stopped, the sky was still stormy, and a ray of late afternoon sunlight was spotlighting the 1912 beaux-arts building. Perfect! I went into shooting mode, a trance like state requiring no thought processes other than motor that I have perfected over the past 40 years, and before I knew what happened I was feverishly working to fulfill my vision in Photoshop. To see it in full detail, please click on view larger. Enjoy!
